______________________________________________________________Notes from the OWS President:I encourage you all to submit your artwork. We need to make Ottawa sit up and take notice of our watercolours. It is up to each of us to promote art through-out the capital and to make a mark for the media of watercolours. Next year there will be a symposium on watercolours and the whole capital will be flooded with watercolours. You will want to be firmly embedded in the watercolour community before this event comes.
Now is the time to get painting for this spring show at St. Brigid’s. What is the jury looking for?
Some of you, like me, have been discouraged by having paintings rejected by past juries and some of you I know have finally made it into enough shows to apply for Fellowship status only to have been rejected by the fellowship jury. I have decided to find out exactly what it is our juries are looking for. The jury process for the OWS show is one of the most fair that I know of, the jurors do not discuss the paintings with each other and do not know what rating the other jurors are giving a painting. The jurors` decisions are final and jurors are not required to give explanations for the rejection or acceptance of works.
I cannot think of any way it could be improved. So with the help of the members of the executive we have come up with a list of things the jury may be looking for. This was published in the OWS newsletter in March 1997. It was originally published in the Nov. 1997 issue of the American Artist.
1. Does the painting exhibit good drawing skills?
2. Do the shapes, patterns, values and colors create a good design?
3. Is it creative use of the medium?
4. Does the texture of the painting enhance the subject matter?
5. Does the texture of the support enhance the subject matter?
6. Is there a variety of textures?
7. Are the edges handled well?
8. Are the darks, lights and shadows placed effectively?
9. Does the painting contain good atmospheric quality and convey a sense of time and place?
10. Has the artist demonstrated his or her knowledge of the subject?
11. Has the artist revealed parts of the subject that may be unknown to the viewer?
12. Does the painting have a mood?
13. Did the artist feel emotional about the subject matter and does it come across in the work?
14. Is the work well presented in terms of matting and framing?
15. Is the painting aesthetically pleasing?
Hopefully this will give you some guidelines in choosing which paintings you will submit for our spring show. Mary Nun has sent me a great list that is probably more current than this one and it will be published in the next newsletter.
Happy Painting!
Brenda
