OWS Mentoring Program

From June 2005 OWS News)

At the most recent executive meeting, on a suggestion by Charlie Spratt, the comittee decided to see if there would be enough interest within the membership for a mentoring program.

Here's how it works. A number of OWS Fellows with teaching experience have volunteered to be available to try the program. An intrested members simply contacts one of the names on the list and several meetings between the two are set up. A few guidelines are suggested. It should be seen as an opportunity to discuss your work and get advice from senior OWS members who have a lot of experience with teaching and juried shows

Suggested guidelines

1. No fee to be charged as it is purely a volunteer program.

2. Maximum of two students per mentor at any one time

3. Time and place of meetings to be mutually arranged.

4.Expected commitment could be several meetings over a two -month period. After that it would be up to the two artists involved to continue or move on.

5. Teaching is not required, nor should it be expected.

6 Meeting discussion might include:

  • critiques of latest work,
  • direction of art study,
  • preparation for juried show,
  • Fellowship jury

The following members have agreed to let their names stand as mentors:

  • Charlie Spratt
  • Linda Banfalvi
  • Leonard Gerbrandt
  • Barbara Brintnell
  • Renate Hulley
  • Alan Bain
  • Ken Finch

Any OWS member is welcome to contact one of the above volunteers. The executive hopes that members will take advantage of this program - we all know how important it is to get another perspective on our work from time to time.
