75th OWS Juried Show, Spring 2017

Watercolour Jewels,
So, what is the traditional 75th anniversary jewel?
From ‘reference.com’, “A 75th anniversary is called the diamond anniversary. It is sometimes referred to as the diamond jubilee and is considered the pinnacle of anniversary celebrations. Diamonds are the strongest substances on Earth, as well as one of the most desired, and therefore represent such an esteemed celebration.”
That’s right, 75 juried exhibitions is just simply remarkable … so let’s celebrate by painting up a storm!
With this in mind, the Exhibition team has selected a fantastic venue that we know you will love! Contract signatures are still pending but we expect to have a final confirmation by the end of this week. So stay tuned for the details about location … we will let you know as soon as we know. The jurying for this show is scheduled for March 25 at the United Church Bells Corners and the exhibition start date is planned for May 1.
And with this show, we will of course continue to have awards (with some cash prizes) for paintings in the following categories:
  • Best in Show (top score): Cash prize $300.00
  • President’s Award
  • Juror’s Award (one award per juror)
  • Morton Baslow Award
  • People's Choice Award: Cash prize $200.00
So the bottom line is that we just wanted to give you a heads-up now because we knew you would want to get started asap. Start thinking, start dreaming and then pick up the brushes and start painting!
We look forward to sending you the final details along with a registration form for Watercolour Jewels - OWS Juried Show Spring 2017!

I am striving.
I am in it with
All my heart."

Stay tuned and happy painting,
Pauline

Reminder for the Watercolour workshop with Don Andrews, October 11-14th,

Reminder
This will be held at the City Archives at 100 Tallwood Drive, off Woodroffe Ave.
The registration for the Don Andrews workshop is limited to 20 participants.  There are 6 spaces left.  Registration is open to OWS and VAA members only, up until February 1st, when the workshop will be widely advertised and open to all.

Everyone will have their own four foot table to work at.  Room 115 at the City Archives is spacious, and the south facing wall of the room is entirely glass - therefore, the room is quite bright.  The room can be locked at night, so that your supplies can be safely left on site for the duration of the workshop.  There is a kitchenette adjacent to the workshop room.  You can leave your lunch in the fridge and heat it in the microwave at noon, and use the kitchenette to get water or clean brushes.  The VAA will provide coffee, tea and water, and a morning and afternoon snack, during the workshop.

To reserve your spot, we require a deposit of $220 against the total ($440) cost of the workshop.  The final payment of $220 will be due 4 months in advance of the workshop, on June 1st,  2017.  Please send two cheques payable to the Valley Art Association: one for $220 dated January 31st, 2017, and a second cheque for $220, dated June 1st, 2017. You can withdraw your registration at any point in time 60 days prior to the workshop, i.e., before August 12th, 2017 - and you will receive a refund, less an administration and processing fee of $50.00.  There will be no refunds at all 2 months prior to the workshop, i.e., after August 12th, 2017, unless we can fill your spot from a waiting list.  If the Valley Art Association has to cancel the workshop due to unforeseen circumstances, you will receive a full refund, within 14 days of cancellation.

The cheques should be mailed to:

Valley Art Association,
c/o Kie Delgaty,
39A Bayside Lane,
Arnprior, ON,
K7S 3T4.

Upon receipt of the cheques, you will receive an e-mail confirmation of your registration.  At the end of May, 2017, you will receive an e-mail reminder, along with a recommended materials list for the workshop.

If you have any questions please email either
Jane Barlow at: barlowjanem@gmail.com or Kie Delgaty at: kdelgaty@sympatico.ca
Or call Jane Barlow at 613-224-4409, or Kie Delgaty at : 613-623-2638

Many thanks,

Hello everyone,
I would like to inform you of this year’s People’s Choice Award from the 74th OWS Juried show. The award goes out to Tong Li for her painting “Traffic at Safari Park”. A $200 cash prize from the Society will be awarded to Tong Li as her art work received the most votes from the viewing public. Congratulations Tong!

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some changes within the Executive Committee.

I am pleased to announce that Vic Dohar is now the Society’s Treasurer replacing Suzanne Daoust. I would like to thank Vic for offering his services and Suzanne for all her great work in the 6 years that she performed this role.

Also, I would like to inform that Brenda Beattie has stepped in for the WebMaster role. This is very exciting and you may have already noticed some changes occurring on the website. Please note that the development of the site is a ‘work in progress’ as more changes will continue to get implemented. I would like to thank Brenda for taking on this challenge and Victor Pavlov for his dedication with over 17 years (that’s a long time!!!) in this role.

And as you will know from our last General Meeting before Christmas, Rick Sobkowicz has reached his 2 year-term (in his case, it was 3 years!) as President of the OWS.
He has stepped down and I am now performing the role of President in his place.
Rick, on behalf of all the members of the OWS, we thank you very, very much for your support, your professionalism, your commitment, your enthusiasm…! I am certain each and every member of the OWS has benefitted directly or indirectly from your unrelenting dedication. Much appreciated by all!

And on this note, you may be interested in some of the vacant  positions that we have on the Executive Committee and at this time we are looking to fill the following roles:
  • Social Convenor
  • Secretary (presently acting in an interim role and would like a replacement)
  • Exhibitions - while we still work with an individual who is named Exhibition Chair for the specific event, we are now more focussed on conducting exhibitions by committee. This is working out quite nicely as there are so many different activities to be undertaken when we prepare for these events.  If you think you might be interested in joining the Exhibition Committee, please let me know.  If you prefer to just give it a try first and then decide, that works too. Your participation at the next juried event would be appreciated (the 75th juried show is already in the planning so stay tuned for more information…you won’t want to miss this one!)
  • Vice President - yes, it’s vacant again :) We filled it for a few months but now we are looking for an interested person. Please know that  the level of involvement could be adjusted based on how much time you would be wanting to commit.
  • If you think you might be interested in participating in any committee, you can reply to my email or call me at 613-220-3738.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Don't forget that the OWS is now on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Ottawa-Watercolour-Society-339764739552340/) Check it out, upload paintings, chat with friends and let us know what you think! (Elizabeth Hogan will be happy to fill you in on more details! Thanks so much Elizabeth).

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Best Regards and Happy Painting,
Pauline Goss
